Probably a bit late in realising this, but FFXI will be PC-only in Europe, which is rather a disappointment. Not only did I really want a nice console-based online RPG without wasteful (because I prob wouldn’t play it non-stop) subscription charges (Everquest, PSO) but I was kind of interested to see the hard disk the PS2 version comes on. The connections are clearly just for a standard IDE disk, and I have faster, larger examples lying around if only I knew how to format them and get the PS to recognise them.
I think Paul’s right – my PS2 Network Adaptor appears to have an internal socket that connects to the HDD. Talking of which, has anyone else got one? No-one to play with
Steven Carpenter
Yeah I’ve got the network adapter, it was while fitting it that I noticed the HDD connectors. My plan was simply to buy the official one (which I think was part of the FFXI “pack”) and maybe transfer the data onto a superior drive, as I think the offical ones were only about 20GB.
Beyond that I hadn’t planned to do much with it, as it’s non-release means there aren’t any games that actually use it – I was kind of hoping that it would let the PS2 catch up a bit with the XBox’s capability to download extra content – while the selection of XBox online content is rather pitiful, the
PS2‘s popularity might generate more stuff.

Articles i’ve read suggest you can use the HDD to store games on which make them run much faster for obvious reasons providing you have HD Loader software
I think you can buy FFXI pack (which includes a hard drive) for the Region 1 PS2

My understanding of the PS2 HDD is you
A – need a PS2 modem to provide power to the HDD
B – a program called HD Loader to allow you to play PS2 games installed on the HDD.
You can install any IDE HDD providing it is less than 120Gb and it will physically fit into the machine. Once you have the HD Loader software this will take care of the formatting, that catch is you only get this software when you buy the official PS2 HDD!! I’m sure there’s a way around this!

i want to know if i can use the hdd loasder with my hdd original for ps2

I heard that not all games are compatible with the HD loader, although I wouldn’t mind getting a PS2 network adapter since I get a bit sick of disc swapping after a while.
It’s just finding a HDD that can be supported, I heard Maxtors are pretty good for this.

I put a disk in, but it did’t recognise it – I suppose it needs the HD loader software, which I haven’t got – but maybe it also needs the disk to be formatted in a certain way, or have a particular filesystem.

Yup, you defo need the HD Loader. You’ll have to nose around the internet for it, it’s about 8MB from what I heard.

The HD Loader will format the hard disk appropriately.
